Recently our Assistant Region Director, Kim Terwilliger, and Northern Catskills Section Chief, Tom O'Brien, presented recognition awards to 4 student athletes for their integrity, leadership, decisiveness and compassion at the NYSPHAA Section IX Alpine meet at Hunter Mountain. The awards were presented for their efforts in attending to a critically injured teammate and friend along with assisting Belleayre Ski Patrol in managing the scene and rescue equipment. If not for their efforts, the injured friends' outcome could have been much worse.

HIGHMOUNT, N.Y. -- Skiing down Belleayre Mountain may be a lot of fun, but for young adult patrollers it’s also a chance to lend a helping hand. "It's really rewarding when you come up to a patient,” said Katie Tota. “You see the look in their eyes that you're there to help them, you're going to save them and make their day better hopefully." The National Ski Patrol trains teenagers ages 15-to-18 to perform at the EMT level and gives them opportunities to volunteer, where they cover all areas of patrolling. "I've learned how to run a Toboggan and help people with injures and get them better care," said Brandin Harvey. On Saturday and Sunday, the ski patrol’s Southern New York program held an overnight clinic to train the volunteers to help skiers. “Outdoor emergency care, ski handling, toboggan handling, we did some outdoor mountain rescue," said Southern New York Young Adult Patroller Supervisor Chris Tota. Volunteers said the program also teaches skills that can be used off the mountain. "People skills, you learn leadership skills. It just gives you a lot of opportunities. You can go new places and show your skills that you learned here," Tota said. With 53 of the best Young Adult patrollers in the region, our kids competed and clinic-ed among the best. In OEC, Skiing, Tobogganing, and Patient Assessment, they competed all weekend in the firm hard pack of the frigid mornings, and the slushy sun filled bumps of the afternoon. While we competed, the most important part of our trip was that we had fun. By the many tears that were shed by our YAP's saying goodbye to our new friends from other mountains, I know that Our region and Belleayre represented themselves and you highly by their positive attitude, their out-goingness, and their willingness to help others. I credit and thank YOU for that reputation which we leave behind this and every year! Without your models of leadership and commitment to patrolling, our YAP's would not be the young men and women they are today. I want to give an extremely special shout out to those in our clinic group- Nick, Ryann, Kelsey, and Allan. You all displayed such a strong willingness to learn and succeed, and this did not go unnoticed by evaluators and division staff. Several had commented to me how well the clinic group succeeded, and how strong our SNY YAP's in the clinic group are. I personally enjoy the clinic track the most, and I hope you four bring back new learned skills to show us in SNY! Congratulations to the following for placing in the following areas: Sam Schneider - First in OEC Katie Tota - 2nd Place in skiing Katie Tota- Second Overall Patroller incorporating all events of the weekend Katie Tota- The Hans Hyson Award -"The Hans Hyson Award is awarded to the patroller and does not take into consideration the scoring and placing of individual events. This award takes into account a patrollers leadership, their dedication to patrolling, and having the drive to continue into the future and chase dreams no matter where they are - NSP and beyond" I'd finally like to thank all YAP's in the SNY Program. Besides the top placement winners, we had several YAP's place in top 5 and top 10 for the disciplines. You all did so well no matter where you placed! As I (tried) to say tonight, you make it all worth it. You are an amazing group of young Adults, and I hope you continue to chase your dreams everywhere you go. I am so proud, and remember, have fun! -Chris Tota SNY YAP Advisor
